While many homeowners consider cleaning their gutters in the autumn, taking care of these yearlong will help ensure the health of your roof, home, and base. Gutter cleaning filter rain and runoff from the roof to the floor, away from the home's foundation.

Your Year-Round Guide to Gutter Maintenance

Gutters can get clogged with leaves and debris; warped due to heat or age, or just fall out of alignment or detach from drainage spouts. Here is a closer look at what house owners will need to keep in mind with respect to their gutters.

Why Clean Gutters are Important

When they are functioning optimally, gutters play a significant role in protecting your roof, house, and base from water damage. Gutters that have not been serviced can cause various kinds of problems, depending upon your house and the season.

Debris, like leaves, can create blockages in your gutter. These clogs allow rain to back up in the gutter stations. During warm weather, this standing water creates a breeding ground for mosquitos and other insects.

Furthermore, if your gutters are not channeling water correctly, it can spill over and reach your home causing corrosion after prolonged exposure. Water which does not drain properly can create muddy areas in spring and summer, and freeze into safety hazards during wintertime.

Searching for Signs of Trouble

If you suspect you may be having difficulties with your gutters, there are two things you can check. The first is to consider the ground immediately around your property. Dirt, mulch, and flowerbeds will often show the first signs of malfunctioning gutters.
